Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic, the centre of south Moravia and the regional capital of the South Moravian Region. It is a historical royal city full of unique cultural monuments. 

Our walking tour around Brno’s monuments and sites of interest begins in the historical centre of the city. One of the first sites we are to visit is the Old Town Hall. The building features a Late Gothic gateway with extensive architectural and figurative features by Antonín Pilgram from around 1510. You will find out from your tour guide why the central pinnacle on the stone gateway is bent, and how a dragon and a wooden wheel found their way into the passageway.

We will also take a walk around Zelný Trh – the Cabbage Market. Zelný Trh is dominated by the Parnas Fountain. The fountain symbolises the cave where the hero of Greek mythology Hercules tied up the vanquished dog Cerberus. 

We will visit the Capuchin Church and its Crypt. The most interesting site here is the crypt beneath the church. A system of air ducts made it possible to mummify the bodies of the dead which have been preserved in these subterranean spaces since the church and monastery were built.

We will then move on to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and Denis Sets.The church was a Romanesque basilica in the 11th century which was converted into a Gothic church in the 14th century. A Baroque conversion was performed by Mořic Grimm in the years 1738–1748. Denisovy Sets is also found beneath Petrov. A fountain of health, a colonnade and a music pavilion can be found here and the park is dominated by a marble obelisk. The park offers a beautiful view of Brno.

We will stop by at the New Town Hall in Dominikánské Náměstí (Dominican Square). The former Dominican Monastery served the needs of the representation of the estates and the holding of provincial assemblies and courts since it was established in the 13th century. The New Town Hall is presently home to the mayor and the city council. The medieval cloister, historical gateways and staterooms in particular are well worth a look.

We will then take a walk in Náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square).This is the largest and oldest of Brno’s squares. It was established in the 13^th century. These include Dům Pánů z Lipé (The House of the Lords of Lipá), one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Brno, the Neo-Renaissance Klein Palace and Dům u Čtyř Mamlasů (The House of the Four Atlantes) dominated by its four supports sculpted in the shape of male figures. A monumental plague column stands in one of the square’s open spaces.

We will also visit Saint James’s Church. It was established at the end of the 14th century. It is the most important Late Gothic structure in Brno. The church’s imposing tower rises to a height of 92 metres. Valuable works can also be found in the interior – a Gothic crucifix, the cast tomb of Raduit de Souches and a Baroque organ. Saint James’s Church is Brno’s most valuable church in artistic terms.

We will also take the walk up to Špilberk Castle.The castle was established on a hill above Brno by King Ottokar II of the Přemyslid dynasty in around 1270. The castle is now home to Brno City Museum. Visitors can take a look at the casemates with their torture chamber and instruments of torture.

Villa Tugendhat

The Functionalist Villa of the Tugendhats with an untraditional lay-out and unique technological equipment, masterpiece of the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe from the 1930’s was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. The tour of the villa interior is in great demand and must be booked in advance; however, the garden may be visited without any previous arrangements.
